GO TOURING: An Overnight Hut Trip

Join us to Kees & Claire Hut

Join us for our first multi-day winter hut trip to kick-off the season! 3-day, 2-night guided ski touring experience in the Whistler backcountry is a chance to connect with other likeminded folks and build confidence in the backcountry.


This experience is designed to bring together women looking to explore, connect, and build confidence in the mountains — no matter your level of ski touring experience. With the support of ACMG-certified guide Holly Walker of Fall Line Guides, you’ll learn essential backcountry travel and safety skills while soaking in some of the Coast Range’s most stunning alpine terrain.

Expect full days on the skin track, cozy hut evenings, and a welcoming, atmosphere surrounded by like-minded women. This event is supported by Arc'teryx Whistler!

Key Information:

  • AST-1 certified
  • Lift Ticket: If you do NOT currently possess a valid Whistler Blackcomb lift ticket (Seasons Pass, Spirit Pass, Edge Card, Epic Pass, etc.), you can purchase a backcountry lift ticket (cheaper than a day pass).
  • Must feel confident skiing or snowboarding on black runs
  • No touring experience required to join
  • Open to women or non-binary folks only

Gear (option to rent):  

  • Avalanche safety equipment (transceiver, shovel, probe)
  • Touring skis/splitboard required + poles and skins

Who this is for

  • Confident skiers and snowboarders (must feel confident on Black runs) with AST 1 certification.
  • New to touring but confident with skiing/ snowboarding? No problem — we’ll review all the basics on Day 1.
  • Need your AST 1? Take Holly’s AST 1+ course on December 3–4 to get ready. 

What's Included:

  • 3 days of professional ACMG guiding and instruction

Requirements:

  • AST 1 certification (or join AST 1+ Dec 3–4)
  • Ability to ski/ride Black runs confidently 
  • Touring setup (ski or splitboard), avalanche gear, and hut meals (renting is an option)
  • Backcountry Lift ticket: If you do NOT currently possess a valid Whistler Blackcomb lift ticket (Seasons Pass, Spirit Pass, Edge Card, Epic Pass, etc.), you can purchase a backcountry lift ticket (cheaper than a day pass).

Pack List:

Essentials:

Avalanche Gear:

  • Avalanche transceiver (3-antenna) with new alkaline batteries
  • Probe (minimum 240cm length)
  • Shovel (metal required)


Hardware:

  • Backcountry skis or split-board (skis/board, pre-cut skins, ski poles)
  • +50-litre backpack (to fit all of your gear, food and have everything enclosed - no dingle dangles)
  • Helmet (mandatory)


Clothing:

  • Waterproof/breathable jacket and pants
  • Lightweight, breathable jacket (for uphill skinning/climbing)
  • Mid-Insulation Layer Top (ex. fleece)
  • Insulated jacket (synthetic insulated jacket is strongly recommended, down as an alternative)
  • Lightweight gloves for climbing/skinning
  • Warm gloves or mittens
  • Warm hat
  • Buff or other types of neck warmer
  • Base layer / long underwear top or bottom
  • PJs or comfy clothes for hanging indoors
  • Extra ski socks (wool or synthetic)

**Please no cotton clothing for ski attire**


Miscellaneous:

  • Sleeping bag
  • Sunglasses
  • Goggles
  • Sunscreen
  • Sun hat
  • Ski strap (2 or 3, extra is best)
  • Small personal ski/snowboard repair kit for your own bindings
  • Personal first aid, medication
  • Cell phone and/or camera
  • Head Lamp with Spare Batteries


Food:

  • Water Bottle and/or Thermos (1L min)
  • Pre-pack lunch for day 1
  • Snacks!
  • 2 x breakfast (to make and eat at hut)
  • 1 x dinner (to make and eat at hut) (we have an extra dehydrated meal as a gift)
  • 2 x lunches (to be made at hut and eaten outdoors)
  • Coffee, tea, electrolytes
  • Dessert, chocolate, etc. 
  • More snacks!
  • Any beer, wine, pop or other such beverages you may want during the trip

The Plan

8:00am: Meet at Arc'teryx Whistler store. Introductions, gear check and avalanche transceiver check (we will review avalanche companion rescue throughout the day). 

9:00am: Load Whistler gondola, ride Peak chair and begin to ski down to Symphony chair.

10:00am: Ski tour to K&C hut over Flute and Oboe mountains (approx 4 to 6 hours) Distance 10 km and 500 meters ascent. 

4:00pm: Check in to the hut, set up sleeping bags, and apres snacks. 

5:00pm: Cook and eat dinner.

7:00pm: Lounge time, stretching, etc. 

8:00pm: Bed time


6:30am: Wake and breakfast

7:30am: Warm up stretch session

8:00am: Ski boots on, ready for ski tour :) 

8:30am to 4:00pm: 7 to 8 hours of ski touring, objective depends on the weather and avalanche conditions: options include Whirlwind Peak, Russet Ridge, Cowboy Ridge, Corral zone. Distance 10-15 km and 800-1,000 meters ascent. 

Evening repeat of the night before...


6:30am: Wake and breakfast, pre-pack

7:30am: Warm up stretch session

8:00am: Ski boots on and early depart

Option A: 8:00am to 10:00am >> short ski tour with lighter backpack

Option B: 10am >> Sleep in and ready to ski tour, all packed up for departure

10:00am: Whole group departs for return back over the Musical Bumps

3:00pm: Back in bounds at Roundhouse at Whistler Mountain

4:00pm: Option to download, depending on coverage lower moutain

5:00pm: Apres in Whistler Village!

About Kees and Claire Hut

Situated above Russett Lake within Garibaldi Provincial Park, at the foot of mountains like Whirlwind Peak, the Kees and Claire Hut is the first of three huts in the project.  Not only will this hut be a key piece of the Spearhead Traverse experience, but it can also serve as a destination for day based ski touring and summer hiking.  With 38 bunks this is the largest hut in the project.

This event includes 3 days of professional ACMG guiding and instruction, avalanche safety + companion rescue training, 2 nights at Kees & Claire Hut, pre-trip resources, mentorship, and an Arc’teryx gift and one dehydrated dinner meal. All other hut meals are brought by participants.


You must feel confident skiing or snowboarding black runs at the resort. No prior touring experience is required — we’ll go through all the basics on Day 1.


Yes. AST 1 certification is required. If you don’t have it yet, you can join Holly’s AST 1+ course on December 3–4 to be ready for the trip.


Participants need a full touring setup (ski or splitboard), skins, poles, avalanche safety gear, clothing layers, hut food, and overnight essentials. Rentals are available if you’re missing items. A full Pack List is provided below.


Yes — you’ll need access to the Whistler Blackcomb backcountry lift system to start the tour.

If you do not already have a valid pass (Seasons Pass, Spirit Pass, Edge Card, Epic Pass, etc.), you can purchase a Backcountry Lift Ticket, which is cheaper than a regular day pass. Instructions on where to buy it will be sent in your pre-trip email.


Yes. Touring skis, splitboards, skins, poles, boots, and full avalanche kits can all be rented in Whistler. If you’re missing anything, we’ll provide a list of trusted rental shops and recommended gear options in your pre-trip info pack.


All bookings are non-refundable after December 1st (7 days before the trip). If you can’t make it, you’re welcome to transfer your spot to another person.
